How to Machine Wash a Leather Suede Jacket?

A key piece of 1970s fashion, the suede jacket has never really left our wardrobes. With its soft suede leather, its many different colors and cuts, it offers many possibilities to enjoy a good quality garment, durable over time and which protects both against the cold and the wind. However, like any material of animal origin, suede requires some precautions to be maintained, so how do you machine wash a suede jacket? Answers!

What Is Suede?

What is commonly called suede can also be called suede leather, reversed leather or even suede leather. It is therefore another treatment of the leather which makes it possible to obtain this effect very gently. Suede is a very popular material since it allows, like leather, to make bags, shoes and of course clothes and in particular jackets. For example, you can opt for a lined suede jacket in winter or a fringed suede jacket in mid-season.

Suede offers many possibilities which means that you can find many styles of clothing in this material. Be careful though, suede, like leather or wool, is of animal origin and therefore requires that we take care of it in several ways so that the garment is as durable as possible over time. When you want to wash a suede jacket in the machine, a few precautions should therefore also be taken here in order not to damage this type of item.

Machine Wash a Suede Jacket: How to Do It?

To wash a suede jacket in the washing machine, there are several possibilities. If the jacket still has its label, it may be preferable to read the information on it. If the logo with the small basin full of water is not crossed out, it means that it is possible to machine wash the suede jacket (if a number is also present, we will even know the maximum temperature).

However, some jackets no longer necessarily have their label (this is particularly the case for vintage jackets which are very popular items). You can then machine wash your suede jacket, taking a few precautions. First of all, the machine must have enough space so that the drum is not overfilled. A fur-lined suede jacket for men, for example, can take up a lot of space and going to a laundromat can then be interesting to take advantage of washing machines with a larger capacity.

Thoroughly Dry a Suede Jacket

After washing his leather suede jacket in the washing machine, you will have to dry it. Here too, some precautions are in order. We avoid the use of the dryer which may be a little too hot and aggressive for the jacket. Most often, it is recommended to hang the jacket on a hanger in a well-ventilated room. It will then be able to dry gently and without its shape being altered. Once dry, it can of course be worn again.

Maintaining a Suede Jacket: the Right Gestures

More than washing a suede jacket in the washing machine, there are basic gestures that allow you to take care of suede. To remove the dust you can use a special suede brush which will allow you to remove the excess gently and without damaging the leather. There are also protective sprays that will help protect the material and in particular against water stains. Indeed, it is not recommended to wear a suede jacket or any other article of this material in the rain, the drops tending to form stains. The same goes with the application of perfume.

For the removal of common stains, there are so-called erasers that allow gentle cleaning of suede. For more robust tasks, it is often the best to seek the help of a professional in order to avoid errors.

Finally, it is also important to avoid wearing this type of jacket on very hot days and to store it in a closed cupboard, because the sun’s rays may eventually discolor the jacket.
